Sue Pollock from Bridport had wanted to set herself a challenge – something to test herself in her “sunset years”.   Initially Sue didn’t even think about undertaking it for charity but when Reverend Phillip Ringer, Bridport Community Hospital’s chaplin suggested she should do it for a good cause it got her thinking.

It wasn’t difficult for her to decide. As a member of the Inner Wheel of Bridport, the group had decided to make a donation to the GO Girls who support all women with gynaecological cancers and raise awareness of the diseases. “I went onto the GO Girls website and the choice for me was simple – it had to be GO Girls – I was so impressed with the work they are undertaking”, said Sue. “Alongside this I have a very dear friend who has been battling ovarian cancer for over a year now and who has received a great deal of support from the GO Girls. When my friend was given limited life expectancy over a year ago with gruelling surgery and rounds of chemotherapy, she is still here. She has shown enormous fortitude and strength of character. I would only hope that if I had to face cancer, I would show the strength she has”.

Jen Barron, Head of Strategy said: “We are all behind Sue – this is a fantastic challenge. More and more people are looking to support us. We are a young, but ambitious charity with  no paid staff, so all that we raise goes directly to supporting our objectives. Gynaecological health in general and gynaecological cancers have lagged too far behind other womens’ health conditions and we must correct this for future generations.”
Sue added “Until I followed the GO Girls work, I had no idea that there were 5 gynaecological cancers. I talked to my granddaughter and she too became interested. She now has her own daughter and is keen that there is change for the future”.

Sue has begun a gruelling training regime with the help of Rob at Bridport Leisure Centre. She says she’s a little worried about cycling up the hills: “I think I’d be faster walking”, she laughed.

GO Girls have recently been nominated for two UK wide awards and Jen said “We are always looking for keen fundraisers to support us – you don’t have to take on anything as energetic as a triathlon – it can be as simple as running a bingo night, a raffle or car boot sale”.
